Countdown to an Organized Christmas: Gifts to Make

Since we’ve already been talking about budgets and gift ideas and our purchased gifts I thought it best to carry on with the theme and focus on another proponent of that.

Organizing homemade gifts.

You know the scenario.  It may have even happened to you.  Well, let me backtrack.  I’ll tell y’all what happened to me.

Around the middle of August several years ago I decided to make some gifts for my family.  I bought those clear plastic Christmas tree baubles that you can customize and decorate yourself and planned to make one for each of my family members.  I even bought all of the paint, ribbon, buttons, and everything else I would need to make these masterpieces.

There were a few problems though.  I kept putting it off.  There was plenty of time until Christmas; no need to hurry!  Until the first week of December rolled around and I hadn’t even started yet.  Then I couldn’t remember where I’d put some of the stuff.  Then I realized they were going to take longer than I anticipated.  Then I got half way finished with them and was completely fed up with the whole plan.  Who needs personalized Christmas presents, anyway?

Needless to say — or rather, I’m ashamed to say — that those half finished Christmas presents are still tucked away in my craft box, waiting to be finished.  Or thrown away.  Yeah, probably thrown away.  That definitely needs to happen soon.

Anyway, my point is:  if you don’t have a plan in place — and stick to it — you probably shouldn’t even attempt to make homemade gifts.  Especially if you have multiple gifts to make.

Unless you like stay up until all hours of the night on Christmas Eve to get those gifts finished.  (Yes, I’ve done that too.)

But why put yourself through the stress?  Making presents is fun for a lot of people.  I enjoy it too!  But I enjoy it a lot better now that I’ve started making those gifts early instead of waiting until the last minute.

And that, my friends, is the key to having an organized Christmas.

And now, the homework:

Today’s Assignment:  If you haven’t already, decide now if you’re going to be making presents this year.  What will you make?  How many will you need to make?  What materials do you need to complete them?  When do they need to be ready?

Today’s Printable:  CCJ gifts homemade.  Some space for you to write out the whos, whats and whens… and a few other things.
